As a Christian, with a newly forming personal relationship with Christ, I was so energized, and laser focused on “doing the work.” I was so desperate to put all the puzzle pieces together to know my purpose. I didn’t want to miss it. I was so full I was just ready to pour out and get about doing all the things He had called me to do. Can you relate?

Witnessing and hearing the testimonies of all these influential missionaries, preachers, authors and kingdom entrepreneurs, I was so ready to find out my unique skills and gifts and put them to use. I wanted to offer them up to the Father to do the work I was purposed to do…like yesterday. But I found myself at a loss. It felt like God was silent in this area and I couldn’t figure out what it was- what I may have been doing wrong. The problem was, I was looking for some grandiose mission, some big weighty assignment from the Lord and that just wasn’t where He was leading.

During that time of seeking, I remember hearing someone say to me to “just take the best next step.” In all of that searching those simple six words resonated so deeply with me. When God is ready to unfold the BIG God-sized plan, believe that He will. But also know that if he revealed the whole plan, He might just scare you half to death and you would run the other way, lol. He deals gently with us because He knows that this is a journey that will allow you to build confidence and trust in HIM and not just HIS plan! Just think of Moses and how terrified he was of the very first action step God had asked Him to take. He was frightened to speak with his estranged brother, could you imagine God revealing His whole plan for Moses at the burning bush?! In much the same way God works in our heart and gives us small inklings, small next steps, tiny breadcrumbs to follow that lead us to the best, next steps. All of this is SO SO purpose-filled.

So be encouraged, if you are seeking His purpose for your life please know that He will never, ever let you miss purpose. Your purpose exists in this moment and in all the other moments to follow.

Your purpose, is to love and be loved by Him. To be made into the image of Christ. To reflect Him to others. He will give you the BIG picture when your heart is ready, in His perfect timing. For now, what are the small steps of obedience His is asking you to take? If you don’t know then this is the perfect time to set space aside for daily quiet time with Him. To seek Him above all else, to learn to hear and obey His voice and leading in the seemingly mundane occurrences of daily life. I promise, this time set aside with Him is worth so much more than doing the work. Cherish it and cherish the journey!
